A MIXED BAG

This week we have continued with our Hansel and Gretel story and made beautiful books.

We have also been working on ordering numbers 1-10 and 1-20 and some of us can even count in 2s and 5s!

All of the classes have planted sunflower seeds and we can hardly wait to see ours beginning to grow!

Miss Lucie is very pleased with our reading and says she can really tell when children have been practising at home!

Miss Lucie is also very impressed with how responsible and careful we are with our resources. Look at the girls carefully mixing their own colours and taking good care to clean their brushes.

In Phonics we have learned x/y and the digraph ai.

Our Nursery Rhyme this week was Cobbler, cobbler
COBBLER COBBLER

And we have been dancing to Funky Town.

HANSEL AND GRETEL

This week we read the story of Hansel and Gretel.

We acted it out, made gingerbread houses and made maps of the story.

In maths we have started trying to work out word problems, for example 'If Miss Lucie buys 5 apples at the shop but drops 2 on the floor, how many apples has she got left?' We are beginning to record these problems using number sentences.

The weather was very unpredictable this week, we had some very warm sunny weather and some cold wet weather too. We have been noticing the changes that this brings to our garden. Look at the enormous piece of ice that we found!

We continue to add to our letters and sounds in Phonics and are beginning to learn the names of the letters as well as the sounds that they make. This week we added v/j/w to our collection and the words no/go/my.

We have been learning the Nursery Rhyme 'There was an old lady who swallowed a fly' click below to hear it.

SPRING IS IN THE AIR!

It was a busy week!
On Monday and Tuesday we thought a lot about our mums and how special they are and we talked about all of the things that they do for us. We made cards and presents for our mums to celebrate International Women's Day.
We carefully measured out the baking soda.

We mixed in a little bit of food colouring and we chose which essential oils to use. The most popular scents were lavendar, ylang ylang, peppermint and a blend called citrus bliss.

On Thursday and Friday we were busy preparing for our Spring Festival. We made flower crowns and wrote down our wishes for Spring which we then hung on our Spring tree. In our special assembly we tried to wake up the sleepy bear by reminding him that all the signs of Spring are appearing everywhere around us!

Everybody added their Spring wishes to our tree.

We had a big tug of war between Winter and Spring .

Afterwards we danced around to celebrate the arrival of Spring.

We woke up the bear and he and Mr Ieuan took our tree to the very top of the pyramid! Then we danced around and played music in a big circle.

This week we also learned the rhyme Miss Molly had a Dolly

HOMEWORK
Have a look in your garden and see if you can see any signs of Spring. If you do, draw a picture or write down what they are and bring it to school to show your friends!

FRIENDSHIP AND VALENTINE'S DAY

Reception class has been very busy over the last week and a half.
We talked about friendship and how to be a good friend; we made heart leaves to decorate our school friendship tree during our Valentine's day celebration.

Decorating the tree with messages of friendship and love.

We read several stories about friendship including Iris and Isaac the polar bears and Lost and Found.

LOST AND FOUND

We studied the story about the boy and the penguin in detail: thinking about how each felt and talking about our friends.
We also talked about the South Pole and imagined what it would be like to be part of a penguin colony. Here are some of our penguin pictures.

We used a variety of techniques to make these pictures including torn paper and finger painting.

We have also been improving our writing, here are some sentences we have written in response to the story.

In maths we have been working on finding 'one more than' a given number.

Outside, the rise in temperature has meant that finally had snow soft enough to build not just one snowman but an entire snow family.

And when the snow melted a giant river appeared in the middle of the playground and we watched it turn into a rainbow river when Miss Lucie added some food colouring to the water!
